3rd National Reiki Conference
and Concurrent Practitioner Seminars Brisbane 12-15 October 2006
Reiki Australia warmly invites all Reiki initiates and anyone with an interest in the introduction of Reiki into 'mainstream' health care environments to attend Reiki - Touching Lives.
This conference will unite the heart, spirit and the wisdom from two Reiki lineage bearers with the practical knowledge and experience from leading health industry figures who are actively integrating complementary and supportive therapies into mainstream health care facilities.
Our venue, the Margate Conference Centre at Redcliffe, near Brisbane, is located in a tranquil and picturesque piece of paradise and provides the ideal setting for learning, fellowship and relaxation.
International guest speakers include Phyllis Lei Furumoto, lineage bearer Usui Shiki Ryoho and grand-daughter of Hawayo Takata who brought Reiki to the west in the 1930s, and Pamela Miles, leading exponent of integrating Reiki into conventional medicine and author of the book "Reiki - A Comprehensive Guide", recently published by Tarcher/Penguin.. Dr Ranga Premaratna, lineage bearer of Reiki Jin Kei Do, will also attend and both lineage bearers will share their journeys with Reiki and present intensive workshops on their forms of practice.

Lindy Hou
Paralympian Gold Medalist
Lindy Hou fulfilled her life time dream of standing on the winner's podium at the 2004 Athens Paralympic Games, as the Australian flag was raised, and singing our national anthem by winning 1 Gold, 2 Silver and 1 Bronze in the Women's Tandem Cycling events.
Lindy is vision impaired. A degenerative eye condition called Retinitis Pigmentosa RP) has left Lindy legally blind since 1996. Her Guide Dog "Harper" has been her companion for the last 2 years. Lindy has adjusted to the deterioration of her eyesight whilst never letting go of her dreams; her sporting excellence has spanned ball sports, triathlon and competitive cycling. In 1999 Lindy rediscovered the joy of cycling on a Tandem bike. Lindy's inspiring presentation focuses on dreams, goals, team work and turning challenges into the seed of growth.
Margaret Gargan
Founder and Manager of Care and Education, Bloomhill Cancer Help
Margaret has been nursing for 40 years, 30 specialising in palliative care. She has presented papers at international (Cancer Nursing Conference, London 1988) and national conferences. Margaret is a guest lecturer at The University of Queensland to 1st year medical students. She has played a key role in instigating 4 models for palliative care in ward 4B in The Prince Charles Hospital in Brisbane and Karuna Hospice Service in Brisbane. Margaret was the coordinator of palliative Care Services for the Sunshine Coast District Health Service for four and a half years and has received numerous awards in recognition of her vast contributions and service to the community. In 2002 Bloomhill Cancer Help was awarded the Inaugural Des Scanlan Memorial Award for the most outstanding community organisation.
David Oliver
Coordinator, Brownes Cancer Support Centre in Perth, WA
David Oliver is the Coordinator of the Brownes Cancer Support Centre. He was appointed when the Centre opened in September 2001. The Centre receives 150 visitors per week and is centrally located in Sir Charles Gairdner Hospital, a major public teaching and research hospital. The Centre's goal is to provide information, support, and access to safe, supervised complementary therapies. David has a lot of experience rking with volunteers and complementary therapies. He draws on his knowledge from a wide background of interests including adult education, small business and complementary therapies. He has an extensive interest and experience in holistic therapies and philosophies and believes in integrating their best aspects into mainstream practice.
Pamela Miles
Founding President of the Institute for the Advancement of Complementary Therapies
Pamela, a Reiki master, practising Reiki since 1986 has thirty years experience in natural medicine and forty years of meditation and yoga. She is well-respected for her pioneering collaborative work in conventional health care settings, including creating Reiki programs in prominent New York City hospitals; presenting Reiki at medical schools and conferences; training physicians and medical students to practice Reiki; and publishing articles in both peer-reviewed medical journals and popular media. Pamela has also participated in research and is the founding president of the Institute for the Advancement of Complementary Therapies. Her new book Reiki: A Comprehensive Guide, has been strongly endorsed by Drs. Andrew Weil, Mehmet Oz, Christiane Northrup, and others. Her private practise in New York City serves people of all ages, levels of health and diversity of conditions.
Cath Maddox
Coordinator of Counselling, Education and Complementary Therapies: Hopewell Hospice
"I can affirm Reiki as an invaluable part of holistic hospice care. It works beautifully in conjunction with palliative medicine and counselling to provide a sense of peace in end-of-life care. At Hopewell, many of our residents have received Reiki throughout their time here, from the day they arrive until their death. It has helped to manage pain, treat anxiety and promote peace. We use Reiki to support the residents and family members, as well as the staff and volunteers. Sometimes, when there is nothing left to say, the gentle touch of Reiki is a way of being present, providing support and aiding the journey of life at this, often difficult, time."
Lizzi Swatland
Illness Support Coordinator: Paradise Kids : Hopewell Hospice Services
Hopewell runs a program in the home or hospital for children who have a life-limiting illness over a period of several weeks. Lizzi specifically works with children with a life-limiting illness for Paradise Kids which is part of Hopewell. She has a team of volunteers who all have Reiki in their hands.
Eileen Chapman
Reiki Practitioner and Master
Eileen has been a full time professional Reiki Practitioner since 1995 and Reiki teacher since 1994. She has a background in yoga and meditation and was a Shiatsu practitioner and educator, teaching Oriental Medicine Theory and supervising Shiatsu clinical practice students. Eileen was a steering committee member and inaugural vice president of the Shiatsu Therapists Association of Australia (STAA). Trained in Therapeutic Touch (Krieger/Kunz method) and Japanese Meridian Acupuncture, in 1992 Eileen created the Reiki Clinic at the Community Centre of the Windana Society in Melbourne, a government-funded Drug and Alcohol Withdrawal Program.
Liz Currey
Reiki Master and Body Harmony Practitioner and Teacher
Liz began her training in Reiki in 1988, and completed her Master Teacher level in 1992. She also trained as a Body Harmony Practitioner and Teacher in Australia and Britain and ran a successful practice for the past 15 years, while teaching Reiki in many centres throughout New Zealand. She has led groups of Reiki practitioners, worked with disabled adults and refugees at the RAS centre, gaining valuable experience within a multidisciplinary mental and primary health care team. Liz has co-facilitated workshops in NZ in support of Reiki Teachers who want to raise teaching standards, expand their knowledge of Reiki, and teaching skills, while forming a strong network with other teachers. Liz continues to teach and is coordinating a group of practitioners to work with women with breast cancer.
Phyllis Lei Furumoto
Lineage Bearer Usui Shiki Ryoho
(In the lineage of Usui, Hayashi, Takata and Furumoto) Initiated into Reiki at an early age, it was Phyllis's duty to treat her grandmother, Hawayo Takata when she came to visit. After studying psychology at college, Phyllis worked in a psychiatric hospital and later as a university administrator. She was initiated as a master in April 1979. Phyllis apprenticed, traveling and working with Takata, as she gave treatments, taught first and second degree classes, and trained and initiated masters. After Mrs. Takata's death in 1980, Phyllis was recognised by the Reiki Master community as her grandmother's successor in the lineage. Phyllis travels worldwide to foster the practice of Usui Shiki Ryoho as taught by her grandmother. Her Japanese roots and Western upbringing combine to give her the insight necessary to bridge an Eastern healing art into the context of a Western culture.
Dr Ranga Premaratna
Lineage Bearer Reiki Jin Kei Do
Ranga, born in Sri Lanka, began Buddhist meditation practices at about age fourteen. During a position as a research scientist, University of Wisconsin, he discovered Reiki. After Ranga received initiation and training into all levels of Reiki his inner knowing was that the information he received was not complete. After deep meditation with the intention of finding the right teacher, Ranga met Venerable Seiji Takamori, a unique, highly developed spiritual master. Ranga received intensive and complete training in all aspects of meditation and Buddho System of Healing, and Reiki as developed and practised by Seiji. He was empowered to teach all levels of these practices and named the Reiki he learned from Seiji Reiki Jin Kei Do - the Reiki Way of Compassion and Wisdom.
Di Lawson
CEO, Community Services & Health Industry Skills Council
Di Lawson, who holds a Masters in Education and qualifications in Nursing and Women's Studies, commenced as CEO of Community Services and Health Industry Skills Council in July 2002 bringing to the role a 14 year history of learning and business development specialisation. Her research, publications and consultancy portfolio includes the conduct and management of a range of national competency and training projects in Health, Business (HR) and Financial Services. As a HR development consultant she has assisted many organisations in Finance, Health, Community Services, and General Business to implement assessment and staff development based upon national benchmarks. Di's success of, turning around the business fortunes of a national RTO and GTC in the finance sector was a challenging and rewarding career highlight, earning her a nomination as Telstra Business Woman of the year.
Dr Craig Hassed
GP and Senior Lecturer - Monash University Department of General Practice
Dr Craig Hassed is a director on the board of Australasian Integrative Medicine Association. He has strong teaching, research and clinical interests in mindfulness-based stress management, mind-body medicine, meditation, holistic healthcare, health promotion and medical ethics and takes courses for professional groups and the general public. He also teaches in the cancer support programs at the Gawler Foundation, and takes courses at the Petrea King Quest for Life Centre. Dr Hassed writes regularly for medical journals particularly in Philosophy of Medicine and has published two books entitled "New Frontiers in Medicine" (Volumes 1 and 2) and a third book on Mindfulness-based stress management entitled "Know Thyself".

All Usui Shiki Ryoho Masters welcome.
Phyllis Lei Furumoto - This circle is open to all masters practising Usui Shiki Ryoho, the form of Reiki practice that Hawayo Takata brought to the west in the 1930s. An opportunity for masters to deepen their understanding of practising Usui Shiki Ryoho, and to explore ways to support the public practice of this system.
