Training in the system of Reiki can support your healing and personal development
The word `Reiki' is a Japanese phrase that can be translated as `Universal life energy'.  A system using this energy for healing and personal growth was developed in Japan in the 1920s by Mikao Usui. The Usui system of Reiki was first brought to the western world by Hawayo Takata in 1938.  Since then, Reiki has spread around the globe and a number of different branches have been established, each developing their own form of teaching and practice.

Following training in the system of Reiki, spiritual growth and self-healing are supported through giving and receiving regular Reiki treatments.  There is much anecdotal evidence that Reiki can be beneficial for a wide range of conditions, and that it safely complements medical and other treatments.  Reiki is effective as self-treatment orwhen delivered by another person.

Reiki can be learned and practised by a person of any age.  First level Reiki training is all that manypeople desire, however additional training is available for those who wish to extend or go more deeply into their practice.  Once trained, you can treat yourself, friends, family and animals.

First level Reiki training

Depending on the branch of Reiki this can involve from ten to eighteen hours tuition and includes:-
- initiation by a teacher whose lineage can be traced to Mikao Usui
- the precepts or principles of the branchin which you are training.  These precepts or principles vary between the different branches of Reiki, however they are all based on those developed by Mikao Usui
- the history of Mikao Usui and the evolution of the branchin which you are training
- instruction for self treatment and the treatment of others
- practical experience in self-treatment, and in giving and receiving Reiki treatment with others

Selecting a Reiki Master/teacher
The Reiki energy, your energetic connection to Mikao Usui through your Reiki Master's lineage, and the teachings of your branch, are passed in person from Master to student, so it is important to be taught by a Reiki Master whose lineage is traceable, in an unbroken line, to Mikao Usui.
In order to select a Master who will be the most appropriate to your needs it is helpful to ask aprospective Reiki Master/teacher about their Reiki practice, lineage and training.   Since one's understanding of Reiki deepens with practice, the information you seek may include how long a prospective teacher has been practising Reiki.  Receiving a treatment prior to taking a class can also be helpful in selecting your Reiki Master.  If you are learning Reiki to support yourself or someone close to you whose well-being is challenged by a diagnosed condition, you may wish to consider the scope of the teacher's Reiki treatment experience.

You can also ask what ongoing support is provided.  Many Reiki Masters offer opportunities for their students to regularly come together to share Reiki treatments, or to review Reiki classes.
Reiki Masters listed in Reiki Australia's Master directory have a lineage traceable to Mikao Usui, are insured and have agreed to abide by our Code of Ethics.
