Reiki master John Harvey Gray, passed away peacefully in his home in New Hampshire on January 12 2011. John was almost 94 years of age. At his bedside, were his beloved wife, Dr. Lourdes Gray, his daughter-in-law Monika Gray, and his faithful Yellow Lab, Mickie.
John was one of the original 22 Reiki masters trained by Hawayo Takata, the Reiki master who first brought Reiki from Japan, to the west, in the 1930's. John has dedicated more than 30 years to living and practising Reiki. He was a colourful character and remained active in his treatment and teaching practice throughout those years. In a television interview at age 90, John remarked that he had never considered retiring! In the same interview he credits Reiki self-treatment for his longevity "This Reiki energy that I've been giving myself has helped me be alive at age 90"
John Harvey Gray is the longest-practicing Reiki Master in the Western Hemisphere. His active teaching practice began in 1976 and he has introduced over 15,000 students to the wonder of Reiki.
The John Harvey Gray Center for Reiki Healing, Jaffrey, New Hampshire will host a year-long celebration of his life and his legacy. Lourdes Gray writes “Through Reiki wellness clinics, talks, demonstrations, and other special events we will honor him.”
